Have you ever considered homeschooling your kids? Did Covid affect the way you see education for your family? When our schools went to distance learning in spring of 2020, we first experienced having to educate our kids at home, but I quickly realized that was not homeschooling. Many of my friends were complaining about homeschooling their kids on social media, but I learned that actually homeschooling is a completely different experience. With distance learning we had no say in what our kids were learning, what curriculum was used, and what schedule they had. It was incredibly frustrating for me as a mom and was the first time I had seriously considered looking into homeschooling.
The fall of 2020-spring of 2021 we decided to have our kids attend and online charter school. While this is also not traditional homeschooling, it helped me to see the benefits of homeschooling because our schedule was much less rigid, and I was able to see exactly what my kids were learning. I could help my kids when they were struggling because I had all the materials right there. We weren't alone, because many families decided (or had no choice because of their situations) to either homeschool or have their kids attend online school during that school year.
Despite the hopes that Covid would go away, it hasn't and many families are still seeing education differently. I truly appreciated watching "The Homeschool Awakening" and hearing other families' stories and reasons for the choices they made regarding homeschooling. I was shocked to hear so many different motivations for making the switch from public school to homeschool, and the differing results.
