As a mom, you don’t always have time to dedicate to your hair in the morning. You either leave it looking the way it did when you got out of bed or you quickly tie it up, out of the way in some sort of uninspired fashion. I personally tend to either leave my hair down or clipped up because it’s too short for most ponytails or other styles.
Many moms assume that this is the way that it has to be. After all, when you have screaming kids to attend to, your hairstyle is the last thing on your mind.
However, while achieving some styles is probably unrealistic, that doesn’t mean that you’re forever consigned to putting in a bun and forgetting about it. You still have options.
The Twisted Ponytail
The twisted ponytail is perhaps the simplest yet most flattering hairstyle that a woman can choose. Instead of braiding the ponytail all the way down, you just loop it over and under itself at the top of the neck, and then just allow the rest of the hair to dangle down elegantly. It takes about 30 seconds to do, and you don’t even have to wash your hair.
Grown-Up Pigtails
If you’re a little too old for full-on pigtails, you might want to slightly modify your approach with a more grown-up look. Start by creating two ponytails and then twist the ends to form two chic buns, like pendulums dangling from a clock. Adding more volume helps to make the style look more “adult,” and is a great option if you have laid-back social events planned for the day.
Braided Headband
Just allowing your hair to dangle naturally is probably the simplest style, but if you want to add a little extra character to your look, then creating a braided headband is a great way to go about it. While it looks complicated, it actually takes less than a minute, once you have the right technique.
Don’t overdo the look, though. Adding too many accessories can make the style feel a little stuffy and overbearing.
Loose Curls
If your hair is naturally curly, then you’re good to go. But even if it isn’t, it only takes a few minutes to put beautiful ringlets in your hair.
The trick here is to start the night before. Put foam rollers in your hair and allow them to do their magic while you sleep. Then remove them in the morning, spritz, shake, and rock and roll.
Hot rollers are another option but beware of hair damage. Any heat treatment raises your risk of brittle, dry, and damaged hair, plus split ends.
The Classic Pixie
Busy moms also regularly opt for short hair, as it is easier to manage and requires less effort to tame in the mornings. However, unless you want a “short hair, don’t care” look, avoid cutting it too short, or shaving. Instead, go for a classic pixie. This still enables you to retain your feminine charm while requiring far less management and maintenance.
Passion Twists
Getting this style requires a lot of upfront work, usually at a salon. However, because passion twists that last up to six weeks, you don’t have to worry about restyling your hair regularly. Curls will remain intact for a long time until you decide to wash them out.
Passion twists also come with another benefit: they protect your hair. Tightly binding the strands reduces the hair’s surface area, helping to slash UV damage caused by the sun.
Curly Bob
Waking up in the morning with boring shoulder-length hair can leave you feeling somewhat uninspired. It’s a perfectly reasonable cut, but you wind up looking like everyone else.
The trick here to making your hair more inspiring is to make a quick modification. Grab your curling irons and then apply them to the ends of your hair, curling them inwards towards your neck. It only takes a couple of minutes and helps to frame your face.
The Hun
If you’re feeling a little tired of wearing your hair down all the time and you want to try something different before your day gets underway, then the “hun” could be it. This hairstyle is a modified version of the ponytail. You start by pulling back the top section of your hair and tying it in a bun at the back of the head before spritzing and scrunching the remaining hair, allowing it to hang naturally.
French Braid
You can also try your hand at a French braid, another modification of the classic ponytail. The concept is simple: start by creating two French braid plaits in your hair, close to your head. Then use sections of hair from the back of the head to act as a ponytail scrunchie, allowing the best of the hair to dangle at the back.
Straight Bangs
If you have naturally straight bangs, then it's easy to achieve a demure, professional look in the morning before you start your day. Just grab your straightening irons and glide them over your hair a couple of times. To protect your hair, use a heat protection product that will keep it looking good, no matter how many times you apply heat.
Half-Up Top Knot
Tying a full top knot can make you look a little off-balance, particularly if you have long or thick hair. However, going halfway can be equally inspiring.
For this style, grab all of the hair from the front of your scalp and tie it into a knot. Then allow the hair behind the ears to dangle down as it would normally.
This style is particularly helpful for moms because it keeps the hair off the face. You can spend all day bending down, changing nappies, and never have to stop what you’re doing to peel hair back behind your ears.
Choose A Classic Braid
Lastly, if you want to keep your hair looking stylish but also out of the way, you might want to consider going for a classic braid. Simple three-strand braids give your hair volume while also getting it out of the way, making it easier to work, either at the house or in the office.
