It's basically paper mache with yarn. To make spider orbs, you'll need: toy spiders, balloons, yarn (we used white), corn starch, and water. We actually made these at the same time as our cheesecloth ghosts and used our corn starch mixture for both projects.
- First, pour 2 cups of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 cup of corn starch and mix thoroughly.
- Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave for 30 more seconds...and on and on until it gets thick.
- Let that cool for a few minutes.
- Blow up your balloon to the desired size of your spider orb.
- Cut a bunch of yarn to manageable lengths (you'll be dipping then wrapping the yarn around the balloon.).
- Dip the yarn into the corn starch paste, squeeze off any extra and wrap the yarn around the balloon. Repeat until your balloon is satisfactorily covered, and looks like a spider web.
- Set your spider orb in a safe place and let it dry. When it's dry, pop the balloon and put toy spiders inside.
- Hang or set your orb out as a decoration and admire your (or your kids' creations).
