Growing up, my mom had one of those Flexible Flyer Sleds. Somehow she would manage to fit herself with four kids on it, and we would go flying down the mountain sides! So, this year, I decided to make her some little Popsicle Stick Sled Ornaments to put on her tree since we're too far away to enjoy her sled with her this year.
All you need to make your own is: Popsicle sticks, wood glue, something to cut the sticks with (I use a small garden pruner), red paint, and twine or yarn.
I used regular sized Popsicle sticks and arranged them like so:
I wanted to make sure that the sled was the length of one stick, so I laid one next to them and cut straight across the "body" of the sled. Then I cut the piece that your feet rest on (what is that called, anyhow?!) to be slightly wider than the sled.
I cut two supports to be just narrower than the body of the sled and glued them across the bottom.
I painted two sticks red for the runners and once those were dry, I glued them to the bottom of the sled. You can use hot glue, but that tends to fall apart while in storage and wood glue feels so much sturdier to me.
Next, I glued on the "foot rest" or piece that lets you steer the sled.
Then I used a rotary tool with a very small drill bit to drill a hole in each end of the "foot rest".
I threaded some yarn through each end and tied it, and I was done!
Actually, I made three sleds and Mod Podged a picture of each of my kids on one, but didn't get a picture of the finished product. Either way, the ornaments are adorable and I sure hope my mom loves them!
Thank you The Craft Patch for the cute inspiration!
