Climbing Toy

Make these fun climbing toys with your kids to keep them entertained this afternoon!

You will need an empty cereal box, markers, a drinking straw, a penny, yarn, and two beads.

Cut a panel off of the cereal box and have your child draw a character or animal on the back-side.

Cut two pieces off the straw (about 2 inches each) and tape those to the back of your child's drawing. Tape the penny just below it (see the picture below):

Cut a piece of yarn about 10 feet long (this can be cut shorter if you need to later). Fold the yarn in half and thread each end through one of the straws so the open ends are towards the bottom of your picture.

Tie a bead on each end of the yarn. This keeps the yarn from slipping through the straws.

Loop the fold of the yarn over a nail on the wall or an "over-the-door" hook.

Have your child grab a bead in each hand and work their hands back and forth (like a sawing motion). The friction should make the picture start climbing up the string. It helps if your child pulls the strings away from each other slightly as the picture starts to climb. Once they get the hang of it, you can start having them race or time themselves.
