American Flag Sugar Cookies

It’s been a while since we’ve made sugar cookies and yesterday I couldn’t resist any longer…I started wondering how on earth I could make American flag sugar cookies and this is what we ended up with:DSCN5532

The process seems long and complicated, but these turned out so cute and I can’t wait to take them to my husband’s work party! If it’s confusing, please leave a comment or e-mail me and I will explain it better.

I had two great helpers in the kitchen who added all of the ingredients to mix up a batch of Baked Bree’s sugar cookies. We then divided the dough into thirds and colored one of them red, the other blue, and the last we left white.DSCN5511

Divide the red and white dough in half and roll each half between 2 sheets of waxed paper…you will end up with 4 flat disks of dough. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.DSCN5513

Take your blue dough and roll it into a log. Wrap with waxed paper and run your hands along each side to flatten them out so it’s more of a long brick. Chill for at least 1/2 an hour.DSCN5514

Layer one red disk on top of a white disk and trim the edges until you have a nice rectangle (save the scraps of dough!). DSCN5518Cut the rectangle in half, and cut 1 half of the rectangle in half again. Take your 1/4 pieces and layer them on top of the 1/2 piece as seen in the picture below:DSCN5521

Cut your blue brick to the same length as your Utah shaped red and white (ideally you will be cutting it in half so you can make the next batch of flags with the rest of the log). Lay it in the nook you’ve made and trim to fit into the flag. Use your fingers to smooth out the crevices between the colors.DSCN5515

Use a sharp knife and cut your flags about 1/4 inches thick. You can smooth out any bumps along the edge with your fingers. Lay them on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until slightly brown on the bottom. Remove and let cool on the cookie sheet for one minute. Transfer to a cooling rack and devour!DSCN5524

Repeat with the other half of your red, white and blue dough. Take the remaining scraps of dough and smoosh them into a brick and cut those to make more cookies…these are going to my boys until we take the flag cookies to hubby’s party.

  2. These are totally cute cookies! We love making sugar cookies at our house. The only difference is we use colorful frosting to decorate them for the various holidays. But I love how patriotic your flag cookies are!!

    And I bet they're tasty too!
