Scout Patch Blanket

When my mom was a little girl, she was brought home from school on a fire engine as her house was burning down. Her family lost everything, but thankfully her mum and sister (who was home sick) got out safely. All my mom had left was her school bag and the wool blanket the Red Cross had given her.

DSCN4911Years later, my mom sewed all of her Girl Guide (the British equivalent of Girl Scout) patches onto the blanket. Did you know the Brownie Promise when she was a girl said this: “I promise to do my best to do my duty to God and the queen. To help other people every day, especially those at home”?

When it was time for my first Girl Scout camp away from home, she gave me the blanket so I could have a piece of home with me to alleviate my fears.

After I had moved up in Girl Scouts and had a Brownie sash full of badges, mom took them off and added them to her patch blanket. Over the years, more and more were added and I took over sewing them by hand onto the blanket. I continued to add patches through orchestra, flags, and high school letters and it became more and more crowded.DSCN4919

A patch blanket is a convenient and practical way to remember all the years of scouting that many children go through, that they can take on camp outs with them, or pass down to their children. Just hand or machine sew the patches on, add another fabric on the back and binding to make a comfy, colorful blanket.

I can’t wait until I have a daughter in Girl Scouts so I can give her this blanket, and add her patches to it. This blanket holds so many memories and I can’t wait to share them with the little girl I hope to have one day :).

  1. What a sweet post. My grandsons are in the cub & Boy Scouts and this would be a great idea.

  2. Judy, your baby powder story on my blog was hilarious. And I can relate. While babysitting my nephew (when I was 18) the same thing happened to a lesser extend and that was such a nightmare! I gave up trying to clean it up and tried to just brush it evenly into the carpet before my aunt got home, lol.

    Kids!!

    Have a great week!
