It’s official…I’m never buying cheap mittens for my kids again! They are so stinkin’ easy to make, and you can do so many fun things with them!
For example…sharks! Now, to get the full effect from this post, you may want to hum the theme to Jaws ;) These took me half and hour to make and K has loved them!
You will need fleece, felt and a button (as well as sewing machine, scissors, the usual).
All you do is trace you child’s mitten hand (fingers together). Add a fin on top, opposite of the base of the thumb. You may want to make your fin a bit bigger…I just didn’t want it getting in the way of sleeves.
If you didn’t add extra room for seam allowances, do so when you cut out 4 of your mitten pieces. Add plenty so there’s room for your little one to grow…
Cut two pieces of felt the same length as the fingers of the mitten, and two pieces of felt the same length of the inside of the thumb. You’re making the teeth with this. You can cut the teeth now, or after you have sewn your mittens. All four strips will be about a 1/2 inch wide.
On the right side of one piece of fleece (does fleece have a right side?), place your felt teeth so they will be inside the seam allowance. If you want to be safe, line it up with the outside of the mitten (you can always trim the felt later).
Take another mitten piece and lay it on top. Pin it all together and sew along the edge (except of course the side your hand will go into).
Trim off excess felt/fabric/strands of thread and turn right side out.
Fold over the wrist and sew along the edge.
Sew a button where the base of the middle finger would be. Make sure it’s nice and secure.
Release those sharks to the wild and acclimate yourself to the constant roaring that might ensue! Apparently sharks roar out of water…
I’d like to thank my brilliant husband for the idea of shark mittens, and Mme Zsazsa for the inspiration!

those are great- maybe one day I'll get a sewing machine and learn how to sew
ReplyDeletethose are awesome :)
ReplyDeleteThere IS a right side to fleece. If you pull on the cut edge, it curls to the wrong side.
Oh my goodness gracious....I freaking love this! Seriously, these are the cutest mittens I have ever seen! Great work, I hope to see more great mittens ideas in the future! :)

Wow! These are so cute. I really need to learn how to sew. There's just too many cute things to make.
ReplyDeleteLove it! They're adorable and I never even thought of making my own mittens, but you're right - they look easy! These would be great gifts for my nephews... especially if I made dinosaurs, and I know my girls would love them as well!
ReplyDeleteThis is so funny! I made some shark gloves based on Mme Zsazsa's pattern too and then googled "Shark mittens" to see what was out there.
ReplyDeleteMine are much meaner looking :)
