My Story: Eleventh Grade

I was finally 16 and could go to the school dances that everyone had raved about. Along with not being allowed to date until I was 16, I couldn't go to the school dances. Our group of friends went together, with very few of us pairing off.

My mom made my dress, my friend's mom did my hair and it was perfect...I was so excited! We went to dinner before hand, and when we got to the Homecoming dance, it was nothing like I had expected. The room was hot, crowded and loud with obnoxious music and many people dancing in ways that shocked me. Drama ensued as boyfriends made grievous mistakes and girlfriends left in tears.

This year I also made it into the city wide orchestra. We met once a week for 3 hours which was often exhausting but I loved it! I became good friends with a girl who had come from Sweden to be a nanny for a year, and we spent a good deal of time together outside of orchestra.

Though I was allowed to date, I didn't go on a single date, but I was still so busy with flags and orchestra that I really didn't have the time. There were days I left at 5:00 AM and didn't get home until 9:00 PM, eating meals in the car as we drove from one rehearsal to another.

This is week 12 of Mommy's Piggy Tales where we recount memories of our growing up years in an effort to preserve our history for ourselves and for anyone who cares to read them!

  1. I also wasn't allowed to date until I was 16, and I've read several posts by others whose parents insisted on the same dating age! How fun it is to read so many different posts by so many different people, and yet find commonalities! That's one of the things I've loved about Mommy's Piggy Tales. :)

  3. I forget about those days of leaving early and coming home late. I think I must have had the worst nutrition back then - always eating candybars at lunch and fries from McDonalds for supper. I thought it was outrageous when my parents wouldn't let me date when I was 14 (yikes! what was I thinking?). Our school didn't have dress-up dances besides prom - just casual ones.

  4. Sounds like a busy year for you. Those school dances are WAY over rated, but I think you looked beautiful. I wasn't allowed to date until I was 16 and I was so thankful! I did City Band when I was in high school and college and loved it, but grew to dread the Stars and Stripes Forever... The piccolo part was a nightmare!
