Cop Mama reminded me of one of my most recent/recurrent Mama guilts. K has been potty training for a while, but night time just wasn't working. He would wake up some times, and other times we would wake him up before we went to bed, but for 2 weeks straight he was wetting the bed and I had had enough.
So...we put him in diapers at night. All of the potty training advice I had read or heard said that once you commit to underwear NEVER go back to diapers. We tried pull-ups once and he was certain it was a diaper.
At first he complained, but now he knows that he only wears a diaper at night time and can wear underwear during the day, and our little system seems to be working out fine.
I still feel guilty sometimes wondering if we're somehow scarring K by making him wear a diaper every night, but I do have to admit that the extra sleep I get, and not having to wash his sheets constantly are overriding that guilt by quite a long shot!
Update: April 30, 2011 K still wets the bed every night. We have tried letting him get soaked and feel uncomfortable, but he doesn't wake up. Right now he wears a cloth diaper at night so he can still feel it, which will hopefully allow him to learn to stay dry when he is developmentally ready. I have come to accept that I can't force him to stay dry and this is one thing that has to be on HIS terms.
Head over to Mama Guilt Monday to share your guilt...I promise it makes you feel better :)
It sounds like this is a struggle for a lot of parents! Glad to know I'm not alone :-)
ReplyDeleteJust think, someday when are kids are teenagers, we'll look back at this and laugh!
Thanks for linking up!
I heard that too about potty training and my daughter wore a pull up at night, which is essentially a diaper and hey she is doing fine. She wore that pull up for months even though she was doing so good on the potty. Once she was dry for a few weeks at night, we did panties and never looked back. Soon I will be potty training my son and I am totally scared! Ha!
ReplyDeleteeh....honestly, I don't put a lot of stock in what "experts" say. We put Princess in a pull up at night, even after we switched her to real underpants until we just decided not to buy pullups anymore....when we DID switch her to underpants at night, we didn't let her drink after dinner, and we made her go potty right before bed. she learned quickly, but it was a headache for the first couple of weeks. And my Monkey is potty training right now--in big girl underpants, but with a pull up on at night and nap time. (she's still learning how to go potty while awake. I'm not gonna try to force her to control her bladder while she's asleep)
